What the hell? Web 3.0? I read that article in the New York Times today too and I have to say I was underwhelmed. It's just recycled stuff about Artificial Intelligence and it doesn't even mention the Turing test. The thing that was surprising was that the article was commented by my favorite bloggers in "Welcome Web 3.0" and "Web 3.0 is the Semantic Web?"
Me? I like the old adage that 'new technology is overated in the short run and underrated in the long run'. I like to think the main attribute of Web 1.0 was silliness. Despite the facts, I'm going ahead with my fantansy that the term 'Web 2.0' was created in about 2003 by two grisled 32 year olds that lived through 1.0 at a party directly linked to VC money having been doled out. After getting charged up on some fine Napa vino and talking about VC's opening the wine cellars again and other new things one must have said, 'yeah, dude, it's Web 2.0 all over again!'.
Then Web 2.0 was about connecting people (like 'community wasn't the big buzz word in 1995?), then it was about using AJAX or Ruby on Rails, no it was about blogging, being in terminal beta and fast upgrades. As Seinfeld said, 'yadda, yadda, yadda'.
The real work of reinventing established industries and wringing out new value, like Newspaper Classifieds, Music and Movies, has only just begun.
